Question

Why don't the electric field lines cross?

Open in App
Solution

Electric field lines:

  1. If electric field lines crossed at the crossing location, two electric field directions would exist, which is not feasible.
  2. So, if two lines meet anywhere at the place, drawing two tangents at that position shows two orientations of the electric field, which isn't really conceivable when there is only a single direction at any point.

Therefore, lines of forces never cross.
