What is friction? Why do we have such a hard time slipping on a rainy day?

Friction:

1. Surfaces in contact with each other produce friction when they move across each other.
2. Friction is determined by the smoothness or roughness of the two surfaces in contact.
3. When the surface is smooth, the friction between the two reduces as there is not much interlocking of irregularities. As the surface becomes rougher, friction increases.
4. On rainy days, we are more likely to slip because water acts as a lubricant between our feet and the ground. Dry friction is converted to fluid friction by this lubrication (rainwater).
5. As a result, the friction between our feet and the earth decreases, causing us to slip.

Therefore, as a result of the reduced friction, we slip on a rainy day.
