Question

Why does frictional force gets increase when two surfaces in contact are polished beyond a certain limit?

Solution

Friction force:

  1. The force that resists motion when the surface of one object comes in contact with the surface of another is called friction.
  2. Friction decreases with smoothness only to a certain degree
  3. When two surfaces in contact are polished to an extreme degree and become exceedingly smooth, they become intimately connected.
  4. The adhesion force enters the picture now.
  5. The motion of one surface over another becomes slowed as a result of this force, resulting in an increase in friction.
