Question

Why is a thorn modified branch?

Open in App
Solution

Thorn:

  1. Thorn is a modified branch because it arises from the bud present in the axil of leaves that is meant to develop in a branch.
  2. It is a defensive modification as it is hard, straight, and pointed and so it prevents the grazing by herbivores.
  3. Technically speaking, a thorn is a modified, pointy stem.
  4. It takes place where such a branch would typically grow - in the axil of a leaf.
  5. Also, we can say that the spine is a modified, pointy leaf.
  6. The spine is located relative to a leaf because it contains a bud in its axil.
  7. Because they resemble modified, acutely pointed stipules only at the base of a leaf, these spines are known as "stipular spines."
  8. The expanded, hollowed-out stipular spines of the Central American acacias with swelling thorns are actually home to stinging ants.
