Solution

Reason why the pencil appears to be bent in water

  1. When a pencil is dipped in water in a container , it appears to be bent because of a phenomenon known as the refraction of light.
  2. The bending of light ray ,caused by the change in speed, from one medium to another is known as refraction of light .

Understanding whether the light ray will bend with the same extent in kerosene or oil

  1. The bending will not be the same as kerosene and oil are denser than water .
  2. The light will bend away from the normal while passing through a denser medium .
