Question

Without plotting the points indicate the quadrant in which they will lie, if (i) ordinate is 5 and abscissa is -3 (ii) abscissa is -5 and ordinate is -3(iii) abscissa is -5 and ordinate is 3 (iv) ordinate is 5 and abscissa is 3

Solution

Find the quadrant in which the points lie.

The sign of the quadrants are as shown below in the graph:

In which quadrants x and y coordinate have same sign? | Snapsolve

abscissa {\displaystyle \equiv x}{\displaystyle \equiv x}-axis (horizontal) coordinate

ordinate {\displaystyle \equiv y}{\displaystyle \equiv y}-axis (vertical) coordinate

So,

  • The point whose ordinate is 5 and abscissa is -3 will lie in second quadrant.
  • The point whose abscissa is -5 and ordinate is -3will lie in third quadrant.
  • The point whose abscissa is -5 and ordinate is 3 will lie in second quadrant.
  • The point whose ordinate is 5 and abscissa is 3 will lie in first quadrant.

Thus,

The point whose ordinate is 5 and abscissa is -3 will lie in second quadrant.

The point whose abscissa is -5 and ordinate is -3will lie in third quadrant.

The point whose abscissa is -5 and ordinate is 3 will lie in second quadrant.

The point whose ordinate is 5 and abscissa is 3 will lie in first quadrant.
