Solution

Part-1:

Washing soda:

  • The chemical name of washing soda is sodium carbonate.
  • It is a white odourless powder.
  • The chemical formula of washing soda (sodium carbonate) is Na2CO3.

Part-2:

Synthesis:

  • The washing soda can be obtained from baking soda(NaHCO3) by Solvay's process.
  • Solvay's process is a two-step process
  • Where the sodium chloride solution (NaCl) is saturated with ammonia gas (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O) and cooled. A precipitate of solid sodium bicarbonate or baking soda (NaHCO3) is obtained.

H2O(g)+NaCl(aq)+NH3(g)+CO2(g)NH4Cl(aq)+NaHCO3(s)(Water)(Sodium(Ammonia)(Carbon(Ammonium(Sodiumchloride)dioxide)chloride)bicarbonate)

  • The above precipitate of baking soda is filtered, dried and ignited to form solid sodium carbonate (Na2CO3).

2NaHCO3(s)Na2CO3(s)+CO2(g)+H2Ol(Sodium(Sodium(carbon(water)bicarbonate)carbonate)dioxide)

Uses:

  • It is used in the glass, paper, textile and soap industries.
  • It is used as a cleansing agent in industries.
  • It is used in the process of softening water.
