Question

Write the relation between angular momentum and torque.

Open in App
Solution

Relation between angular momentum and torque:

The angular momentum of a particle is given by

L=r×p

Differentiating both sides of the above equation with respect to t,

dLdt=ddt(rXp)

=drdt×p+r×dpdt

Now drdt=v and, dpdt=F

Therefore equation (A) becomes

dLdt=v×p+r×F…(equation B)

since vand pare parallel vectors,v×p=0

Also r×F=τ, the torque on the particle.

Therefore equation (B) gives

τ=dLdt

Therefore, torque on a particle is equal to the time rate of change of its angular momentum.
