Eutrophication:
The rapid growth of plants reduces the oxygen supply in water, caused by excess nutrients.
Nitrogen and Phosphorous are often limiting factors in plant growth.
Therefore they are used in the fertilizers to improve plant growth.
Causes of eutrophication:
The natural runoff of nutrients from the soil and the weathering of rocks.
Run-off of inorganic fertilizers
Run-off from farm manure and erosion.
Discharge of partially treated or untreated sewage and other harmful chemicals such as detergents.
