Solution

The correct option is B

5:1

Step 1. Given data:

Mass of first body, m1 with velocity v1

Mass of second body, m2 with velocity, v2=0

After the collision, the final velocity of the first body, v1'=23v1

Step 2. Applying the conservation of the momentum

Momentum is the product of mass and velocity.

According to momentum conservation, the initial momentum of the system before the collision is equal to the final momentum of the system after the collision.

Using momentum conservation,

m1v1+m2v2=m1v1'+m2v2' ……1 [ v2' is the final velocity of the second body]

m1v1+0=m1v1'+m2v2' [ from 1] [v2=0]

m1v1=m1×23v1+m2v2' [v1'=23v1]

m2v2'=m1v1-23m1v1

m2v2'=13m1v1 ……(3)

Step 3. Applying conservation of kinetic energy

Kinetic energy is equal to half of the product of the mass and the square of the velocity.

According to energy conservation, the energy before the collision is equal to the energy after the collision.

Kinetic energy conservation,

12m1v12+12m2v22=12m1v1'2+12m2v2'2…….2

12m1v12+0=12m123v12+12m2v2'2 [ from 2]

12m2v2'2=12m1v12-418m1v12

m2v2'2=59m1v12 …….4

Dividing equation 4 by equation 3, we get

v2'=53v1

Now, putting the value of v2' in equation 3,

13m1v1=m25v13

m1m2=51

Hence, option (B) is correct.
