Question

A compound microscope consists of an objective lens of focal length 1cm and an eyepiece of focal length 5cm with a separation of 10cm. The distance between an object and the objective lens, at which the strain on the eye is minimum is n40cm. The value of n is

Solution

Step 1. Given data:

fo=1cm, Focal length of objective lens

fe=5cm, Focal length of eyepiece

L=10cm, Distance between eyepiece and objective lens

vo=? ,Distance between image and objective lens

uo=n40cm, Distance between object and objective lens.

Step 2. Calculating value of n

As, L=vo+fe

10=vo+5vo=5cm

Now, Using Lens formula

1vo-1uo=1fo

Putting values in the above equation,

15-1uo=111uo=15-11uo=-45uo=-54uo=54

n40=54n=50 uo=n40cm

Hence, the value of n=50.
