Question

A cubical solid aluminum (bulkmodulus=-V(dP/dV)=70GPa) block has an edge length of 1m on the surface of the earth. It is kept on the floor of a 5km deep ocean. Taking the average density of water and the acceleration due to gravity to be 103kgm-3 and 10ms-2, respectively, the change in the edge length of the block in mm is ________.

Solution

Step 1: Given Data:

Bulk modulus B=-VdPdV

=70GPa

=70×109Pa

Depth in water H=5km

=5000m

Density of water ρ=103kgm-3

Acceleration due to gravity g=10ms-2

side of cube l=1m

Step 2: Calculating the pressure acting on the cube:

P=ρgH=103×10×5000=50×106Pa

Step 3: Calculating the Change in length:

B=-VdPdV70×109=-V50×106dVdVV=-50×10670×109dVV=-57×1033ll=-570003l=-57×103×1l=-57×3×10-3=-0.238×10-3m=-0.238mm

A negative sign indicates a decrease in edge length.

Hence, the change in the edge length of the block is 0.238 mm.
