Question

Can chromium be obtained by electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Electrolysis:

  1. Electrolysis is a process in which components of a solution are separated by passing a direct current through it.
  2. If a metal has a higher reduction potential than water then only the metal ion gets reduced to form metal.
  3. Now, the standard reduction potential of water is -0.83V and that of chromium is +1.33V.
  4. It can be observed that the reduction potential of chromium is more than that of water.
  5. Hence, chromium can be obtained by electrolysis.
