Question

Do free electrons exist?

Open in App
Solution

Electron- These are subatomic particles which are negatively charged. The structure of the atom consists of the nucleus at the centre which is surrounded by a negatively charged electron cloud, thus electrons exist in a spherical shell of the atom.

Existence of the electron -

  • There are three types of materials conductors, insulators, and semiconductors.
  • Only conductors allow the electrons to move freely, as they have valence electrons in their outermost shell. When the external energy is applied to the atom, this will activate the electron to move rapidly.
  • This will result in a flow of current. Yes, free electrons exist but only in conductors.
