Alcohols are Acylated by:

The acylation reaction is carried out in the presence of acyl chloride or acidic anhydride with certain amount of base .In organic chemistry this reaction is most frequently used for protecting the hydroxyl groups during oxidation reaction.

Thus, alcohols are acylated when they react with acyl chloride in presence of base.
