Question

How do you rationalize imaginary number ?

Open in App
Solution

To rationalize imaginary numbers we need to multiply them by their conjugate:

Suppose ,a+ibis an imaginary number or a complex number, then we need to multiple it by its conjugate ,

that is., a-ib to rationalize.

a+ib×a-ib=a2-b2

Therefore, the product of an imaginary number and its conjugate is not an imaginary number.

Example:

Let 6-7i1-2i

6-7i1-2i×1+2i1+2i

=6-7i1+2i1-2i1+2i=61+62i-7i1-7i2i12-2i2=6+12i-7i-14i212-2i2

=6+5i+141+4 (i2=-1)

=20+5i5

6-7i1-2i=4+i
