Question

How many P Orbitals does Oxygen have?

Open in App
Solution

The p orbitals present in Oxygen are:

  • The atomic number of oxygen is 8and electronic configuration is 1s2.2s2,2p4.
  • There are three 2p orbitals which can hold six electrons. The p orbitals are lobe shapes and all the lobes are at right angle to each other.
  • In Oxygen atom, two covalent bonds can be formed easily due presence of six valence electrons and two electrons can be added by sharing of electron by another atom.

Thus, Oxygen has three p orbitals.
