Question

Is Milk an Emulsion?

Open in App
Solution

Milk: It is a white, heterogeneous, opaque substance that comes like emulsion, colloid suspension, and solution of separate components. Fat is found as an emulsion in colloidal suspensions, with lactose in true solutions with some minerals and soluble proteins and proteins and some minerals in true solutions.

  1. A colloid sometimes called an emulsion, is formed when a dispersion of several liquid forms is concentrated into a single liquid.
  2. It consists of two or more different types of non-homogeneous liquids (liquid phases).
  3. It is cloudy because the multiple phase interfaces disperse light as it travels through the emulsion.

Hence, milk is an emulsion.
