Question

What is the difference between dot product and cross product?

Open in App
Solution

The difference between dot product and cross product:

Cross ProductDot Product
The cross product is the product of the magnitude of the vector and the sine of the angle in which they subtend each other.The dot product is the product of the magnitude of the vectors and the cos of the angle between them
The output is a vector.The output is a scalar.

The cross product of two vectors A and B is:

A×B=|A||B|sinθη^

where A,B are the magnitudes of the vectors and θ is the angle between the vectors

and η^ is a unit vector perpendicular to both vectors

The dot product of two vectors A and B is:

A·B=|A||B|cosθ

where A,B are the magnitudes of the vectors and θ is the angle between the vectors

Hence,the difference is clearly explained.
