What is the p...
Question
What is the pH of the equivalence point?
Open in App
Solution
pH is defined as the value of expressing the acidity and alkalinity on a logarithmic scale.
If the value of pH is equal to 7 then the solution is neutral.
If the value of pH is less than 7 then the solution is acidic whereas if the value of pH is greater than 7 then the solution is basic in nature.
The equivalence point is the point at which enough amount of titrant is added to the analyte solution in the reaction.
For any acid-base titration, at the equivalence point, the number of moles of acid is equal to the number of moles of base.
For any strong acid and strong base, the equivalence point is always equal to 7.
This is because the number of moles of acid and base becomes equal.
It can have different values other than 7 depending on the formation of the strength of the salt.
At
25
°
C
, the pH of the acidic solution is less than 7 and for a basic solution, the pH of the solution should be greater than 7.
For a neutral solution at
25
°
C
, the pH of the solution is equal to 7.
