Neutrophils:

  1. They are one of the first immune cells to respond against infection and constitute 40% to 70% of all WBCs in humans.
  2. It is involved in the process of phagocytosis.
  3. Phagocytosis means engulfing bacteria or foreign bodies and further destroying them.
  4. It is also involved in acute inflammation.
  5. At beginning of an infection, they are the first cells to migrate to the inflammation site.
  6. Various chemotactic factors like complement proteins and chemokines help in attracting neutrophils to the site of inflammation.
