How do bacteria generally reproduce?

Open in App
Solution

Reproduction in bacteria:

  1. Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotic organisms found in different habitats.
  2. There are two methods of reproduction in bacteria.

Asexual reproduction in bacteria:

  1. Bacteria reproduce asexually through fission.
  2. Fission is when a cell grows and divides into two to produce new individuals.
  3. Bacteria can also reproduce via budding, which involves the growth of bud on a parent cell to mature into a new individual.

Sexual reproduction in bacteria:

  1. Bacteria can also reproduce via transformation, which involves taking up DNA from another bacteria through horizontal gene transfer.
  2. Another method of sexual reproduction is transduction involving the transfer of foreign genes using a virus (bacteriophage).
  3. Another method of sexual reproduction is conjugation, where one male (F+) or donor bacteria donates a gene to a female (F-) or recipient bacteria via a sex pilus.
