Question

How much time a bacteria take to reproduce?

Open in App
Solution

Bacteria reproduce by splitting themselves in half, making one cell into two. Every species of bacteria has its own generation time, the time it takes for one cell to become two. Generation times can vary depending on the species of bacteria and the environmental conditions.

Each daughter cell is a clone of the parent cell. When conditions are favourable such as the right temperature and nutrients are available, some bacteria like Escherichia coli can divide every 20 minutes. This means that in just 7 hours one bacterium can generate 2,097,152 bacteria.
