Question

How does the apoplastic movement of water take place?

Open in App
Solution

Apoplast:

  1. Water travels through the root cortex's cell walls and intercellular space via apoplast. Water travels through the root cortical protoplasts using the symplastic route.
  2. Except for the Casparian strips, the apoplast consists of neighbouring cell walls that are continuous throughout the plant.
  3. Depending on the water gradient, apoplastic water flow happens exclusively through the intercellular gaps and cell walls.
  4. This pathway is important because it permits a solvent to diffuse throughout the tissue or organ.
  5. The apoplast route is unaffected by the root's metabolic condition, however, the symplast pathway is directly impacted.
