Question

Is NADH a product of the light reaction of photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Light reaction of photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is the process of the formation of glucose by plants using water, sunlight, and CO2 with the release of O2.
  2. The light reaction, which transforms solar energy into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH, is the first phase of photosynthesis.
  3. Protein complexes and pigment molecules work together to make NADPH and ATP.

NADH:

  1. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) plus hydrogen (H) is referred to as NADH.
  2. This substance is present in the body naturally and participates in the synthesis of energy.
  3. NADH is not a by-product of photosynthesis' light reaction.
  4. NAD+ performs the function of an electron carrier.
  5. The coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide is essential for metabolism.
  6. NAD is a dinucleotide made up of two nucleotides joined by their phosphate groups that are found in all living cells.
  7. In grana thylakoids, light reactions take place, but in the stroma of chloroplasts, dark reactions take place.
  8. While light reactions produce ATP and NADPH, dark reactions deplete ATP and NADPH.
  9. Both light and dark processes result in the emission of oxygen as a by-product.
  10. Light energy is used by photosynthetic organisms (photoautotrophs) to produce both ATP and reduced electron carrier (NADPH).
  11. ATP, NADPH, and O2 are the three products of photosynthesis' light reaction.
