Apical meristem:

  1. Apical meristem is a region of cells capable of division and growth in the root and shoot tips in plants.
  2. Apical meristems give rise to the primary plant body and are responsible for the extensions of the roots and shoots.
  3. Unlike most of animals, plants continue to grow throughout their entire life span because of the unlimited division of these and other meristems.
  4. The cells of apical meristem are capable of repeated division and from which primary root tissues are obtained.
  5. These are present in a small region of root and shoot tip.
