Meristems:

  1. It is made up of small cells capable of dividing indefinitely and giving rise to either similar cells or cells that differentiate to produce tissues and organs.

Based on positions, meristems are of 3 types:

  1. Lateral meristems –
    • Are seen in stems and roots on the lateral side.
    • They generally increase the thickness of the plant.
    • The 2 lateral meristems are cork cambium and vascular cambium.
  2. Intercalary meristems –
    • Are seen in leaves & internodes at the intercalary section and assist in increasing the length of the internodes.
  3. Apical meristems –
    • The apical meristem is seem to be situated at the growing tip of stems, and roots, and also at the apices of the leaf.
    • They aid in increasing the height of the plants.
