Question

What are the 3 antigen presenting cells?

Open in App
Solution

Antigen presenting cells:

  1. In adaptive immunity, antigen-presenting cells (APCs) play a crucial role. T-lymphocytes require these to operate properly.
  2. B-lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells are the three primary antigen-presenting cells.
  3. Extracellular antigen is presented to T lymphocytes for removal by these cells. These APCs consume pathogens and place a portion of antigen on the cell surface, which is recognized by T lymphocytes, using major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules.

Macrophages:

  1. A white blood cell that surrounds and destroys germs, eliminates dead cells, and activates other immune system cells.
  2. Pathogens that do not contain proteins unique to healthy body cells on their surface, such as cancer cells, bacteria, cellular debris, and foreign substances, are engulfed and digested by this kind of white blood cell of the immune system.
  3. Phagocytosis is a defense mechanism that protects the body from infection and harm.

B-lymphocytes:

  1. B lymphocytes are immune cells that originate from stem cells in the bone marrow.
  2. B lymphocytes identify soluble antigens through immunoglobulins anchored on their surface and develop into antibody-producing cells known as plasma cells, which secrete immunoglobulins. To inactivate bacteria, these proteins work alone (neutralization) or in conjunction with complement or phagocytes.

Dendritic cells

  1. Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen-presenting cells that bridge the gap between innate and adaptive immunity and are essential for the generation of pathogen-specific protective immune responses.
  2. Antigen-presenting cell found in tissues such as the skin that promotes immune responses by displaying antigens on its surface to other immune system cells. Dendritic cells are phagocytes that also serve as antigen-presenting cells (APC).
