The three types of algae are:

  1. Green algae:
  • This algae comprises of around 12,000 species.
  • This is green in colour due to the presence of pigment chlorophyll A, carotene and xanthophyll.
  • All these pigments are in the same proportion as that in the big plants.

2. Brown algae:

  • They belong to the class Phaeophyceae.
  • These contain many seaweeds under its class and they are mainly located in the colder waters.
  • These are mainly filamentous or the thalloid algae.

3. Red algae:

  • Red algae are also known as Rhodophytes.
  • These are the oldest group of eukaryotes found on earth.
  • They have antioxidant property due to the presence of polyphenols and many polyunsaturated fatty acids.
