Solution

Protists:

  1. Any wide range of taxonomic groups, especially a kingdom (Protista synonym Protoctista) of eukaryotic creatures, which are normally unicellular, occasionally colonial, or less frequently multicellular and which typically contain protozoans, the majority of algae, and frequently some fungi (such as slime moulds)
  2. Examples of protists include algae, amoebas, euglena, plasmodium, and slime moulds.

Types of protists:

Plant-like protists:

  1. Plant-like protists are eukaryotic, photosynthetic, unicellular, or multicellular, and possess pyrenoids, gametangia, and a flagellum.
  2. Examples of Plant-like protists include Chlamydomonas, Diatoms, Laminaria, Coralline, Ulva, and Euglena.

Animal-like protists:

  1. Animal-like protists are commonly called protozoa (singular, protozoan).
  2. Most protozoa consist of a single cell.
  3. They are animal-like because they are heterotrophs, and are capable of moving.
  4. Although protozoa are not animals, they are thought to be the ancestors of animals
  5. Three types of animal-like protists are paramecium, euglena, and amoebas.
  6. Euglena is special in that they are both animal-like and plant-like.

Fungus-like protists:

  1. Fungus-like protists are moulds. Moulds are absorptive feeders, found on decaying organic matter.
  2. They resemble fungi and reproduce with spores as fungi do.
  3. Examples of fungus-like protists include slime moulds and water moulds
