Solution

Cloning vectors:

  1. The small pieces of DNA which are used to make multiple copies of inserted DNA are called cloning vectors.
  2. It contains the origin of replication and antibiotic-resistant genes.

Types of Cloning vector:

Plasmids:

  1. They are autonomously self-replicating DNA present found in bacteria.
  2. Plasmids are used as a cloning vector for a very long time.
  3. These vectors contain antibiotic resistance genes with high copy numbers.
  4. The most commonly used plasmids as cloning vectors are pBR322 and pUC8.

Bacteriophages:

  1. The viruses which infect bacteria are called bacteriophages.
  2. The bacteriophages can clone a large piece of DNA.
  3. The most commonly used bacteriophages as cloning vectors are Lambda phage and M 13 phage.
