Question

What are the types of specificity?

Open in App
Solution

Enzyme:

  1. Enzyme is a biological catalyst that affects the rate of reaction.
  2. Enzymes have specificity towards the substrate to catalyze the reactions.
  3. Specificity is the ability of an enzyme to recognize substrate from a group of similar chemicals.

Different types of specificities are:

Absolute specificity:

  1. The enzyme can catalyze only one reaction.
  2. Example: Enzyme lactase.

Group specificity:

  1. The enzyme is capable of acting only on molecules having specific functional groups like amino acids, phosphate, and methyl groups.
  2. Example: Enzyme pepsin.

Linkage specificity:

  1. The enzyme acts only on a particular type of chemical bond and does not depend on the type of the molecular structure.
  2. Example: Enzyme α-amylase.

Stereochemical specificity:

  1. The enzyme acts on a particular optical isomer.
  2. Example: Enzyme D-Lactate dehydrogenase.
