Thalassemia:

  1. An inherited disease that causes decrease in production of haemoglobin in the body is known as thalassemia.
  2. A person suffering from thalassemia can also suffer with anemia and microcytosis.

Types of thalassemia:

There are two types of thalassemia: Alpha thalassemia and Beta thalassemia.

Alpha thalassemia:

  1. A person suffers from alpha thalassemia when the body cannot produce alpha-globin.
  2. Alpha thalassemia has two types: Haemoglobin H disease and Hydrops disease.

Beta thalassemia:

  1. A person suffers from beta thalassemia when the body cannot produce beta-globin.
  2. Beta thalassemia has two types: Mediterranean anemia (Cooley's anemia) and thalassemia intermedia.
