It is the series of events that occur within a cell that results in the duplication of DNA and the division of cytoplasm and organelles to form two daughter cells.
Cell growth occurs during the G1 phase of the cell cycle and is closely coordinated with the S phase (DNA synthesis) and the M phase (mitosis).
Steps in cell growth:
The eukaryotic cell cycle contains three stages: interphase, mitotic phase, and cytokinesis.
During the interphase, cells grow by synthesizing proteins needed for the cell's subsequent stages, as well as by replicating DNA for cell division.
There are four stages to the cell cycle:
G1 is the stage of growth preparation.
DNA synthesis takes place during the S phase.
Cells grow and prepare for mitosis during the G2 phase.
Mitosis (cell division) occurs during the M phase.
4. Cytokinesis is the physical process through which a mother cell's cytoplasm is divided into two daughter cells.
