Question

What happens in the vegetative stage of the lytic life cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Stages of the lytic cycle: The lytic life cycle occurs in four stages :

  1. Infection stage
  2. Latent stage
  3. Vegetative stage
  4. Lysis stage or liberation stage

Vegetative stage:

  1. During the vegetative stage, the phage DNA replicates, producing hundreds of molecules.
  2. Enzymes encoded by the bacteriophage genome prevent the bacteria from producing macromolecular (protein, RNA, and DNA).
  3. Meanwhile, the phage DNA synthesizes distinct mRNA to make the needed viral proteins.
  4. The protein components that make up the head, tail, base plate, tail fibres, and so forth are formed in around 10-20 minutes.
  5. These are arranged and built up around each DNA molecule.
  6. The bacteriophage replicates its genome and synthesizes bacteriophage enzymes and structural components using the bacterium's metabolic machinery.
