Question

What is plus strand and minus strand in RNA?

Open in App
Solution

Ribonucleic Acid:

  1. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a nucleic acid that has similar features to DNA and is found in all living organisms.
  2. RNA, unlike DNA, is almost always single-stranded.
  3. Instead of the deoxyribose found in DNA, the backbone of an RNA molecule is made up of an alternate phosphate group and ribose suagr.

Plus strand and minus strand:

  1. The genetic material of most RNA viruses is single-stranded RNA or ssRNA.
  2. The nucleotide sequence of RNA may be identical to that of viral mRNA, with the positive strand or plus strand referring to the RNA strand.
  3. Viral mRNAs are either positive or negative.
  4. The viral RNA genome, on the other hand, can complement the viral mRNA, in which case it is known as the minus strand.
  5. Polio, brome mosaic and tobacco mosaic are examples of positive-strand viruses.
  6. Influenza virus, mumps, rabies, and measles are examples of negative-strand RNA viruses.
