Question

Difference between cardiac output and stroke volume?

Open in App
Solution

Stroke volume:

The amount of blood pumped by each ventricle in one cardiac cycle is referred to as the stroke volume.

Cardiac output:

Cardiac output refers to the amount of blood each ventricle pumps per minute.

Differences between stroke volume and cardiac output:

Stroke volume

Cardiac Output

  1. Stroke volume is approximately 70 ml.
  1. Cardiac output is around five liters in a healthy individual.

2. It is determined by three factors-

  • Preload
  • Contractility
  • After load.

2. Cardiac output can be calculated by multiplying stroke volume by heart rate.

3. It is the filling pressure of the heart at the end of the diastole. 3. If a patient's stroke volume is 75 mL with each contraction and the heart rate is 60 beats per minute. Then the cardiac output is 4,500 mL per minute (or 4.5 L per minute).
