Negative gene regulation suppresses gene expression, e.g. repressor binds to the operator region and prevents transcription of the operon. Positive gene regulation promotes gene expression, e.g. in the presence of an inducer, the repressor is inactivated and this allows RNA polymerase to access the promoter region and initiate transcription.
