What Is the Length of a Sperm?

Open in App
Solution

Sperms:

  1. Sperms are the male gametes produced by spermatogenesis in the testes.
  2. The sperm is comprised of a head, neck, middle piece, and tail. The whole body of sperm is enveloped by the plasma membrane.
  3. The length of the human sperm is around 55-65 µm.

Structure of Sperm:

  1. The Head contains acrosome apically, which contains enzymes that facilitate the entry of sperm into the ovum. It is followed by an elongated nucleus (haploid).
  2. The middle piece has multiple mitochondria, that provide energy for the movement of sperms.
  3. The tail is a flagellum that protrudes out of the cell body and is responsible for the vigorous motility of sperms. The tail helps sperms in swimming so that they can reach the ovum.
  4. Around 200-300 million sperms are ejaculated at once.
