Question

What Pathways Are Adopted By Water After It Is Absorbed By Root Hair?

Open in App
Solution

Water Absorption:

When water is absorbed by root hair, it could move deeper into the layers of the root through two possible pathways that are symplastic and apoplastic pathways.

Symplastic pathway:

  1. When water transports from one cell to another cell through the plasmodesmata.
  2. Plasmodesmata are the cytoplasmic connections between two adjacent cells.
  3. In this case, water transports only through the living parts of a cell.
  4. It is a very slow transport.

Apoplastic pathway:

  1. When absorbed water is transported through the non-living parts of the root that is through intercellular space or cell wall.
  2. Most of the absorbed water is transported in roots through this pathway.
  3. It is a very fast transport but this transport of water is checked by the endodermis.
