Question

What two products are made during the formation of acetyl CoA?

Open in App
Solution

Decarboxylation of pyruvate :

  1. The process by which pyruvate is converted to acetyl CoA with the release of CO2 is called decarboxylation.
  2. Pyruvate produces acetyl CoA during the transition process, which connects glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.
  3. In this reaction pyruvate is converted to acetyl CoA in the presence of pyruvate dehydrogenase enzyme, Magnesium ions, FAD, lipoic acid, NAD+ and TPP (Thymine pyrophosphate) to produce Acetyl CoA with the release of CO2, NADH, and H+.
  4. NADH and CO2 are the two products generated during the synthesis of acetyl CoA.
