Nervous system:

  1. The nervous system is the command center of the body.
  2. It comprises the brain, spinal cord, and all the cranial and spinal nerves.
  3. It is responsible for collecting information from the surroundings and different parts of the body and producing the appropriate response.
  4. The nervous system has two components: neurons and glia.
  5. Neurons are the excitable cells that transmit the information as impulses through the release of neurotransmitters.
  6. The glia on the other hand has a wide range of functions that include immune response, developmental functions, neurotransmitter recycling, etc.

The nervous system can be divided into two main parts:

  1. Central nervous system: It consists of the brain and spinal cord.
  2. Peripheral nervous system: It consists of all the nerves of the body like cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and visceral nerves.

Nerves are of the following three types:

  1. Sensory: These are involved in gathering information from the surrounding through the sense organs.
  2. Motor: These are involved in muscle movements or the release of hormones or secretions from glands.
  3. Mixed: It is involved in both sensory and motor functions.
