Empty Sella Syndrome (ESS):

  1. Empty sella syndrome occurs when there is an enlarged sella turcica.
  2. This is a bony structure whereby the pituitary gland sits at the base of the brain.
  3. Symptoms may include: Impotence in men, Less desire for sex, Irregular menstrual cycle in women
  4. There are two types of ESS: Primary ESS and Secondary ESS.

Primary ESS:

  1. The pituitary gland is usually flattened.
  1. Such type is more common in women who are obese & have high blood pressure.
  2. It also leads to fluid buildup in the brain.

Secondary ESS:

  1. The pituitary gland may be small because of a genetic change (mutation), injury, radiation therapy, or even surgery.
