Question

Why are neurons excitable cells?

Open in App
Solution

Excitability of neurons:

  1. The membranes of neurons are present in a polarized state.
  2. Several different ions interact with the membrane causing a change in polarization, therefore neuron becomes excited.
  3. This ability to become polarized or depolarized is needed for the transmission of nerve impulses.
  4. Therefore, neurons are referred to as excitable cells.
  5. Thus, excitability and conductivity are some special features associated with the neuron membrane.
