Oxidative decarboxylation:

  1. Oxidative decarboxylation is an oxidation response where the carboxyl molecule is eliminated as carbon dioxide.
  2. Oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate is one of the significant steps of cellular respiration, which links glycolysis to the Krebs cycle.
  3. During Kreb's cycle, the pyruvate is chemically changed to acetyl-CoA by decarboxylation in presence of the chemical pyruvate dehydrogenase enzyme.
  4. Succinyl CoA is formed by decarboxylation of alpha-ketoglutarate in presence of catalyst alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase enzyme.
  5. It occurs during glycolysis and the citric acid cycle.
  6. The process is required to release energy.
