Question

Why is the host cell grown first and foreign protein gets expressed later?

Open in App
Solution

Host cell:

  1. A live cell that can be invaded by or capable of being invaded by a foreign pathogen is referred to as a host cell.
  2. A foreign protein, on the other hand, is created outside of the host cell and, if introduced, can harm it.
  3. The first step is to develop the host cells that will be used in investigations to characterise infections or determine protein expression.
  4. The host cells develop in a suitable medium that allows them to expand unrestrictedly.
  5. The foreign protein, whose expression must be defined, is then inserted into the host cell once it has grown.
  6. The foreign protein is introduced after the host cell has developed because the foreign protein can be detrimental to the host cell and cause it to die or function improperly.
  7. As a result, the foreign protein is placed on plasmids known as expression vectors, which contain promoters that may be turned on or off as needed.
  8. This is to ensure that the host is not killed, as we will be unable to identify and characterise the foreign protein if the host dies.
  9. The foreign protein is subsequently closely watched, with crucial characterisation, classification, and function determination taking place.
