Question

Why transpiration does not take place at night?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. It is the loss of water through the aerial parts of the plant.
  2. The water is typically lost in the form of water vapors.
  3. The tiny opening present on leaves i.e stomata help in the movement of water out of the plant.

Transpiration does not occur at night because:

  1. Stomata are generally closed at night time.
  2. It is to avoid excessive loss of water.
  3. Also, plants require water to perform photosynthesis, which does not occur during the night, since, sunlight is not available.
  4. Therefore, the transpirational pull is not required to transport water up to the leaves of the plant.
