Question

1.355 g of pyrolusite sample are added to 50 mL of 1 N oxalic acid solution containing sulphuric acid. After the reaction is completed, the contents are transferred to a measuring flack and the volume made up to 200 mL. 20 mL of this solution is titrated against KMnO4 solution whose strength is 2 g/L and 31.6 mL of KMnO4 solution are required. Calculate the percentage purity in the given sample of pyrolusite.

Solution

20mL of undecomposed oxalic acid requires = 31.6mL, 231.6N of KMnO4 solution

Thus 200mL of undecomposed oxalic acid requires = 31.6×20020=316mL, 231.6N of KMnO4 solution

using N1×V1=N2×V2
= 316mL×231.6N=x mL×1N
= x mL = 30 mL
30mL of 1N MnO2 solution

Mass of MnO2 = N×E×V1000=1×87×302×1000=1.305gm

percentage purity of pyrolusite = 1.305×1001.355=96.31%
