Question

1)Figure shows the effect of light on the rate of photosynthesis. Based on the graph, answer the following questions:
1)At which point/s (A, B or C) in the curve is light a limiting factor?

2)What could be the limiting factor/s in region A?

3) What do C and D represent on the curve?

Solution

Law of limiting factors
According to law of limiting factors, when any chemical process is affected by several factors its rate is determined by the factor that is nearest to its minimal values.

Among other multi factors, this factor directly affects the process, if its quantity is changed.

The understanding of these factors is necessary to determine the yield of that process.

1) Light as a limiting factor -
Light is a limiting factor at A and B (50%) because of the increased rate of photosynthesis with increasing intensity of the light.
A plant cannot carry out the process of photosynthesis with the desired rate if the light intensity is lower than the required amount.

2)Limiting factors in the region A can be either CO2, water or light.
Carbon dioxide along with water is what a plant converts and forms into glucose.
These two factors are really essential along with light energy to carry out the photosynthesis.

3)C in the graph indicates that light is not a limiting factor beyond a certain point, on the other hand D is a line after which the light intensity does not affect rate of photosynthesis.
