Question
1. Form equations for each of the following statement:
a. The length of the rectangle is 7m more than its breadth and its perimeter is 68m.
b. A number divided by 5 gives 7 less than twice the number.
c. A number p multiplied by itself is 7 more than 19.
d. Five eight of a number when added to 3 gives 12.

Solution
(a);
Let the breadth of the rectangle be x m.
Its length as in the question = (x+7) m.
Now the perimeter of the rectangle = 2 (length + breadth)
= 2 (x + x +7) = 2 (2x + 14).
it is given that its perimeter is 68 m.
Therefore,

the
given
situation
and
the
value

(b)
Let
the
number
be
y
.
Now
,
according
to
the
question
when
y
is
divided
by
5
it
gives
7
less
than
the
twice
of
y
.
so
we
can
write
y
5
=
2
y
-
7
⇒
y
=
10
y

35
⇒
9
y

(c)
when
p
is
multiplied
by
itself
it
gives
7
more
than
19
.
So
we
can
write
p
×
p
=
19
+
7
⇒
p
2

(d)
Let
the
number
be
z
,
then
five
eight
of
z
when
added
to
3
gives
12
so
we
can
write
5
8
z
+
3
=
12
